The Amazing Race Asia Season 4 – Country Review

The Fourth Edition of The Amazing Race Asia is coming up but how would the new contestants fare compared with the teams in the previous seasons. Before we look at Season Four contestants, let’s recap on the first three seasons.

So far, we have seen 30 teams from 10 countries competing against each other since the first episode aired on 9th November 2007 when the first 10 teams were flagged off at Kuala Lumpur’s Dataran Merdeka.

Malaysia enjoyed the most representation with 6 teams, followed by Philippines, 5 teams, Hong Kong and Thailand with 4 teams each, Singapore and India with 3 teams each and Indonesia with 2 teams. Japan, South Korea and Sri Lanka had one team each.

Season 1 2 2 1 1 1 1 1 0 0 1 10
Season 2 2 2 2 1 1 0 1 1 0 0 10
Season 3 2 1 1 2 1 2 0 0 1 0 10
Total 6 5 4 4 3 3 2 1 1 1 30

We have seen the winning teams coming from Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The most successful country by far during the first 3 seasons has been Malaysia who had all 6 teams finishing amongst the top 5 positions or a 100% record. Singapore can boast of a 66% record with 2 out of 3 teams finishing in the top 5 and Hong Kong has a 50% with 2 teams out of 4 finishing in the top five.

10th    1 1     1

Season 4 will consist of the least countries, totaling 6 countries. Comparatively, Season 1 had teams from 8 countries while Season 2 and 3 consist of teams from 7 countries.

Four countries will have 2 teams each and they are Malaysia, Philippines, India and Indonesia. Hong Kong and Singapore make up of the sole teams.

Both India and Indonesia have not done well in the previous 3 seasons, one who conclude that the organisers are looking the population base of these two countries to try and increase viewership numbers.

The downside of having too many countries with double teams, will be that it would inevitably lead to a tag team competition. Teams would naturally bond together base on culture and nationalities. It would be more interesting to limit one team per country and have participation from ten different countries. hen any alliances made would truly cross the cultural barrier.

Which countries will be in the top 5 this time? I believe Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia will have at least one team each in the top 5.
