Blackpool pips Chelsea for match one

Aug 17 – The first set of matches have been played for the EPL 2010/2011 season and newly promoted Blackpool clearly stole the show from the defending champions, Chelsea. Didier Drogba scored the first hattrick of the season and led Chelsea to set the pace by thrashing newly promoted West Bromich Albion 6:0 in Stamford Bridge but it was Blackpool’s (Black Who?) 4:0 away win over Wigan which captured the imagination of the fans.

The much awaited clash between Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City fizzled out in a scoreless draw while Arsenal held Liverpool to a 1:1 draw in Anfield in a match which saw the sending off of Joe Cole and Laurent Koscielny.

Elsewhere, Robert Green’s World Cup nightmare continued when Aston Villa hit 3 goals past him in the 3:0 defeat of West Ham. Blackburn got the better of Everton by a single goal while two first half goals were enough for Wolverhampton to overcome Stock City 2:1.

Lastly by not least, veterans Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs prove their worth by adding their names in the score sheet after Dimitar Berbatov against Newcastle United in a 3:0 home win.

After match one, 6 teams started on a winning note, with Chelsea leading the table based on ground difference followed by Blackpool, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers.

Coming up next for the top six,

  • Chelsea versus Wigan (away)
  • Blackpool versus Arsenal (away)
  • Aston Villa versus Newcastle United (away)
  • Manchester United versus Fulham (away)
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers versus Everton (away)
  • Blackburn Rovers versus Birmingham (away)

Interestingly, all the matches for the top 6 teams are played away. Blackpool will be really tested at Arsenal. Chelsea, Aston Villa and Manchester United should be able to keep their 100% record. Wolves and Rovers may drop points.

The match to look out for will definitely be Manchester City versus Liverpool. Both team faltered at the start and have much to prove.

Will be an interesting weekend.
